MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.
BILL PASSES UPPER HOUSE.
The Manawatu-Oroua River District Bill was passed by the Legislative Council on Thursday.
Mr E. Newman, who had charge of the measure, said some of the land affected was recognised as the betfi dairying land in New Zealand. Except in the valley of the Nile, he lmd never seen land of richer quality than that on which the Mnnawaln River overflowed. Unfortunately, the district was subject to Hood, and the usefulness of the land was thereby restricted. Dr. Newman said that while he thought the Bill was a good one in a general sense, lie regretted the absence of the information it contained. To pass such a Bill was like giving a blank cheque. There was no estimate of the cost of the whole work.
Mr E. Newman assured the Council that all was well, remarking Hint question of finance was in the hands of those interested, and he could see nothing fairer than that.
