NAVUA’S TRYING EXPERIENCE.
HOVE TO FOR SIXTEEN HOURS.
Christchurch, August 22,
The Navua arrived from Auckland to-night after a most tempos - tuous passage. Captain Whyborn said the gale was the worst he has ever experienced on the New Zealand coast. The wind commenced to increase at 3 p.m, on Monday, and the vessel was soon staggering in the face of a howling gale. Fortunately Cape Palliser was at hand, and the vessel was soon hove to in (lie shelter of the cape. There she remained from 5 p.m. on Monday till 11 p.m. on Tuesday. The gale was marked by terrific squalls, which at times twisted the vessel around. After leaving Cape Palliser good time was made to Lyttelton, although a tremendous sea was running along the coast.
