RUGBY FOOTBALL.
The local Senior Rugby team is to meet the Bulls team on Easton Park next Saturday. This match should be a very interesting one for onlookers, as the Bulls team las£ Saturday defeated Rata fop the championship of Rangitikei and Foxton is putting its very best team in the field. Both teams play a very open game, so that a good fast game is assured. A gold medal presented by Mr J. T. Folias, will be awarded to the best all-round player on the day. Hawke’s Bay defeated Canterbury at Hastings yesterday in the Ranfurly Shield match by 9 points to 8. Wanganui B. defeated Taranaki B. at Wanganui yesterday by 8 points to 3. Wairarapa defeated Bush Union at Masterton yesterday by 22 to 3. Perfect conditions prevailed with the exception of a cold wind. Play was dull and uninteresting in the first spell, the score at the interval being three points all, but Wairarapa outclassed the visitors in the second spell. w N.S.W. TEAM WELCOMED. Wellington, Last Night. The New South Wales footballers met with an enthusiastic reception, On arrival the visitors were tendered to New Zealand and Wellinghotel, at which they were introduced to New Zealander and Wellington Rugby Officials. Mr S. S. Dean expressed pleasure at the arrival of the team from New South Wales and hoped all members would have an enjoyable time while in New Zealand. They were being given a better tour than on last occasion, two years ago, and were not being sent to so many small places, but they would find the football harder. Mr Dean assured them that they would be well treated right through. A member of the New Zealand team would accompany the visitors to assist the manager in details in connection with the tour. While wishing the visitors the best of luck, Mr Dean expressed the hope that the better team would win right through. At a civic reception this evening the team was welcomed by the Hon. J. G. Coates, on behalf of the Government, Mr Wright (the Mayor), on behalf of the city, and by Colonel Campbell, of the New Zealand Rugby Union, Dr. Newman and others. The manager, Mr and the vice-captain, Mr Davis, responded. The team is light, averaging 12st-. and in the forwards 12.7. Six players are coining by the Ulimaroa. Several first-class players able to make the trip. It was decided at last night’s meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, at Wellington, to appoint J. Richardson, of Southland, captain of the first test team to play New South Wales at Dunedin on August 25th.
