OPENING OF OTIRA TUNNEL
The Otira tunnel will be officially opened this afternoon by the Prime Minister. Mr Massey will be accompanied by a large Parliamentary party. A banquet will be held in Christchurch this evening. The opening scenes of the tunnel will he filmed The following statement does not purport to slioav the complete cost of the eleetriefied section (Arthur’s Pass to Otira) of the South Island Midland Railway, but gives the monkey expended to date as recorded by the Public Works Department, plus liabilities in sight:— £ Expended to date 1,442,242 Liabilities in sight . . 76,334 Total 1,518,576 The length of the electrified section is 8 miles 54 chains.
