At this week’s meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union a letter was received from the secretary of the Shannon Thirds team protesting against an award of the referee, Mr Neville, in the game against Foxton, and stating that as Mr Randall had been appointed by the Referees’ Association and also that as the referee had refused to give a goal although signalled by the line-umpires, and that two 25-minutes spells had been played instead of the customary 40 or 45 minutes, an enquiry by the Union was desirable.
The Secretary explained that the trouble regarding the referees arose through Mr Randall’s appointment as referee for the game having been cancelled but without his being notified to that effect. He pointed out that as the customary protest fee had not been forwarded, the matter could not be gone on with. In regard to the question of the goal it was decided to write that the referee’s decision in this matter was final, and that line umpires should understand that according to the rules of the game they should not raise the flags after a goal was kicked. and that they were only entitled to a voice when asked for an opinion by a referee who was in doubt. The following will represent ton Thirds against Rovers at Foxton, on Easton Park, on Saturday: Perreau, Procter, Wright, Cunningham, Fuller, Ebbett, Shaw, Robinson, Harrison, O’Reilly, Cbaffey, Ross, Townshend, Taylor, Sherlock,
