SHANNON BRIDGE.
MENACE*OP RIVER EROSION,
REPORT EXPECTED SOON,
The report of the engineers of the various public bodies which it was decided to obtain at the recent Shannon conference, held to devise means-oiL-protecting the bridge from possible destruction as the result of river erosion, is expected to be presented to the public bodies concerned at an early date.
The ''engineers were instructed to confer .with Mr P. W. Furkett, en-gineer-in-chief to the Public Works Department and on inquiry being made; by a “Standard” reporter as -'-to the progress of the deliberations, he was informed that Mr F. C. Hay, engineer to the Manawatu-Oroua River Board, was engaged in making a survey of the river bank near the bridge, the result of which will be placed before his colleagues for their joint consideration.
The survey report will not be in the nature of a recommendation but merely as a guide to some definite policy. The reporter was further informed that, in minimising the danger to the bridge, it would probably be found necessary to provide for more room between the natural banks of the river and the stop banks that have beemerected in order to permit of greater freedom for the flow of water.
