FOOTBALL.

Last Saturday’s matches completed the end of the first round of the competitions, the teams standing being as follows: — Senior: Hui Mai 8; Wanderers 8; Otaki 6; Foxton 5; Shannon 3. Juniors: Northern —Shannon 8; Tokomaru 7; Koputaroa 6; Mangore 4; Moutoa 3; Foxton 2. Southern: Otaki 9; Te Horo 6; Hui Mai 5; Rovers 4; Paraparaumu 2: Weraroa 9. / Referring to the Fox ton-Weraroa match played last Saturday, the Levin Chronicle says: Rough play resulted in Weraroa players being warned on more than one occasion. Such play is reported to he pretty general this season and it is up to the referees to see that it is discouraged. Some of the most prominent players in the Union' are the worst offenders, and an example made of one or two of these would have more effect than will picking on to less conspicuous men. Foxton’s best performers were probably Baker, Moses and Robinson whilst Taylor was deadly at place-kicking. During the game he kicked five goals four from tries and one penalty. Foxton won the match on superior combination among the backs. Their passing was clean and intelligent, and free from the “speculating” seen on the other side. Kicking to •he centre by this team also madeN a pleasant break from the etenm-line-kicking that is so common.
