UNPAID COUNTY RATES.
COUNCIL TAKES ACTION. SOLDIER SETTLERS AFFECTED. Morrinsville, May 26. The large amount of rates outstanding in the Taliuna Riding prompted the Piako County Council to decide to take legal action to recover outstanding rates. It was stated that the sum of £950 in rates was outstanding, in the Tahuna Riding, this sum representing two years arrears. Many large landowners who could ailord to pay the rates were in arrears. The chairman (Mr F. W. Walters) said that the Tahuna settlers had more than wheelbarrows to ride in and he saw no reason why they should not pay their rates. it was decided to enforce payment of outstanding- rates within 14 days. The Council also discussed the non-payment of soldier settlers’ rates, the chairman expressing the opinion that it was time the council strictly enforced all future rates, and asked other councils to take similar action. If the soldiers could not make their holdings pay now they should throw up their land. The chairman's suggestion was adopted, and it was also decided to ask the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the legal position affecting this matter.
