FIRE IN NORBITON ROAD.
SIX-ROOMED HOUSE GUTTED. CONTENTS TOTALLY DESTROYED. SPLENDID WORK BY BRIGADE. At about 9.30 o’clock last night a lire broke out in a dwellingliou.se occupied by Mr and Mrs Aitehison and family in Norbiton Road. As Mr Austin Charles was passing the locality ho noticed smoke issuing from the eaves of the roof and gave the alarm. The occupants were out at the time of the outbreak. The brigade arrived when the flames had a good hold on the structure, but with a splendid pressure of water Superintendent MeDermid and his men made a splendid save. The interior of the dwelling and contents however, were practically destroyed. The fire originated in the sitting room near the fire place. When the family left the house earlier in the evening, everything was apparently safe. The house is owned by Miss Taylor and is insured for £4OO. The furniture and effects were insured in the State office for £IOO. Mr Aitehison is a heavy loser and much sympathy will he extended to him in the serious loss he has sustained. This lire is the first which the brigade has been called upon to deal with since the high pressure water service as been installed and despite the fact that the flames had such a mastery over the building when the brigade arrived, they were able to save the building from complete demolition. Superintendent McDormid said there was a splendid pressure of water and this was evidenced by the rapidity with which the flames were subdued.
