BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly, and last meeting of. the present Council, was held in the Council Chambers last night. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The work of the road staff during the past month has included the erection of concrete water trough in Union Street, completing asphalt footpath, Robinson Street, topdressing road in Main Street (northern end) with tar and coke ash, clearing grass and weeds from front of Ihakara Gardens and general maintenance work. The tar ordered from Blenheim has come to hand and is of good quality. We ai’e now engaged in asphalting south end of Main Street to a width of 27 feet. We have, I think, ample tar on hand to reach the end of the road. Our dray is badly in need of repair. I estimate cost of repairing from £lO to £l2 and would like authority to have the work done speedily.
The report was adopted and it was decided that the north side of the Wharf Street footpath be repaired and re-tarred. GAS WORKS MANAGER’S REPORT. This month the apparatus is working quite satisfactorily and we are able to keep up a plentiful supply of gas. The stoker has returned from bis annual leave. The weighbridge which was repaired recently has again broken down and this time the cart smashed the joist which carries the staging so that it will need a new joist and planking. T think the break was caused by one of the casting breaking and so allowing the planking to drop five or six inches and before the carter could stop the full cartload of coal dropped on to the stage. The report was adopted and it was decided to repair weigh bridge. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as under: From Mr 11. Berry complaining re smell from septic tank outlet adjoining his mill on River Bank. Cr. Coley said that a certain amount of the stench came from decayed vegetable matter and stale mill water. It was decided to send a letter of explanation to Mr Berry re sealing of septic tank which would obviate (he nuisance.
From J. G. Honore, making' application to. put in two culverts in drain to give access to his property in Avenue Road. —Application granted.
From F. A. Williams, taxi proprietor, asking the Council to reconsider by-law re painting the register number on car door and suggesting that the number be painted on’ a card and hung over door. Deferred.
From secretary Beautifying Society asking the Council to erect a gate at the back of Easton Park, giving access to Johnston btreet. Referred to new Council.
