PUBLIC LIBRARY AND READING ROOM.

COUNCIL TO APPLY FOR A CARNEGIE GRANT.

Since the destruction of the public library by fire, some two years ago, an up-stairs room in the Town Hall has been temporarily occupied for the purpose but no provision has been made for a public readingroom. At last night’s Borough Council meeting it was suggested that a reading-room be provided in the Town Hall. Cr. Coley opposed the idea. He was not against the town having a reading-room but he was opposed to the Town Hall being used for the purpose. There was also a risk of fire.

Cr. Martin interpolated that smoking in the Town Hall should be prohibited. It was decided to purchase £3O worth of new books. The matter of a reading room was held over in the meantime.

It was decided to make application to the Carnegie Library Fund for £I,OOO for the erection of a new library.

Cr. Martin voted against the motion and interjected as the motion was being read “Blood-money!”

Cr. Coley: Would you accept £10,0(10 if Carnegie offered it to you?

Cr. Martin: No! It’s nothing but “blood-money.” I would send it hack. , (Laughter.) The motion was carried, Cr. Martin voting against.
