SHOPLIFTERS SENTENCED.
Christchurch, Yesterday. Elsie May Chancey (27), Frances Alice Caii’ns (39), Grace Pearce (23), Stanley Allan Miller (22), and David Gordon Miller (20) were each sentenced to nineteen months’ hard labour on each of three charges of shop-lifting from a draper’s shop, the sentence being concurrent. The two elder women were liisters, while the Millers were the sons of Mrs Cairns, and Pearce was engaged to one of the Millers. All had pleaded guilty last week. When sentenced, the elder woman fainted and was carried out while Pearce screamed violently. The Magistrate, Mr 11. Y. Widdowson, said the punishment might seem severe, but a deterrent was necessary. Shop-lifting was mean and contemptible theft, difficult to detect, and bringing suspicion and discredit on innocent persons.
