RIVER EROSION.
NEAR, SHANNON BRIDGE. Erosion near the Shannon bridge in the Awahou riding was the subject of discussion at the Manawatu County Council’s meeting on Tuesday. The matter came up in the engineer’s report, which stated that Councillor Barber and the engineer had made an inspection of the erosion that was now taking place in the Manawatu river near the Shannon bridge. It was quite possible that the next flood would take away the old stop bank at the end of the Ferry Road. The erosion was rapidly carrying away the banks down stream towards the bridge, and already several clumps of willows had disappeared near the end of the old Ferry Road. At present the river was not likely to erode towards the bank that was constructed last year. He would recommend the Council to call tenders for the erection of a stop bank from •the old Ferry cottage to the bridge approach. This would mean that the bank would pass through Mr Piggott’s property, diverting the road on to Mr Bryant’s property near the approach for two or three chains.
The Chairman, Sir James Wilson, pointed out to the Council with the aid of a map the point where it was proposed to erect the stop bank. There was enough money in hand, he said, to do the work, and he proposed that tenders should be called. It was suggestd that the Horowhenua County Council be approached on the matter, but the chairman thought this would be useless as the Horowhenua body was certain to decline to do anything. It was decided to call tenders for the work, the matter to be left in the hands of Councillor Barber.
