TAKAPUNA ORPHANAGE BURNT.

—* - ALL THE INMATES SAVED. Auckland, Yesterday. St. Joseph’s Orphanage, at Taka puna, a 16-roomed house, including four dormitories, was destroyed by fire shortly after midnight on Saturday. The inmates of whom there were 109, including 14 infants, escaped without injury, and liavo been accommodated temporarily in the neighbourhood. The ire originated in the bathroom, and it is believed to have started from ii gas jet, which, under the regulations, had to be kept lighted all light.

The building was erected- about 70 years ago by French missionaries, under Bishop Pompallier, with walls of solid masonry and was used as a college for the education of Maori and European youths until 1893, -when it was taken over by the Sisters of Mercy as an orphanage. The insurances amount to £5,000.
