RIFLE SHOOTING.
A team from the local rifle club journeyed to the Hautere Rifle Club’s range (near Otaki) on Saturday, where the annual competition for the Field Shield was held. Six clubs entered teams, including Upper Haiti, which is at the southern end of the Otaki district. Other clubs competing in addition to Hautere and Foxton, were: Levin, Ngatiawg (last year's winners) and Whareroa (Paraparaumu). Shooting commenced at 11 a.m. and conditions were 7 shots at 300, 500 and GOO yards, 8 men aside. The weather was fine, but the light very changeable and wind (from right rear) puffy and varying. The contest was interesting, with a very close finish, Upper Hutt team winl ning from Hautere by 2 points only, on the last shot fired. Grand totals were as follows. —
Upper Hutt 681, Hautere 679, Ngatiawa 661, Whareroa 656, Levin 644, Foxton 628. The Foxton men were not in form and shot much below their average. Scores were as follows: —
Grand Total 628 The ammunition was faulty as usual, “double-bangers” (hang-fire cartridges) being very frequent, of which, by the way, Foxton had more than their share.
Next Saturday, the second shoot for the Hartley and Frankland trophies will he held at 600 yards.
