WATER AND DRAINAGE.

STORAGE TANK NOT WARJ 'RANTED. At Thursday, night’s meeting of the Borough Council the water and drainage engineer’s report was read as follows and the recommendations adopted u—“With reference to the proposal to construct a low-level tank‘at the waterworks pumping station for the purpose of providing storage to supplement the flow from the artesian wells when" the pump is in operation. The object- of the proposal is to maintain a supply to the pump while in operation sufficient to keep it discharging at its full capacity. The supply from the wells under normal conditions cannot meet this demand and after the pump is in operation for some time the water in the sump is drawn right down. We learn from the attendant that the deficiency is more pronounced when the flax mills are also drawing from their artesian wells. ic We consider that at the present time the construction of the proposed the tank be constructed. Unless the tank be constructed very massively of great cost, when the river flooded the ‘tank would float when the water in it. was drawn down to any extent. The capacity of the pump can be reduced to suit that of the wells either by partially

closing the valve in the ( discharge ~ —pipe, or by running the pump at a slightly lower speed. This can be done by running the engine somewhat slower or by replacing the pulley on the. pump by one somewhat larger. Further, if the pumping were done in the evening'when there is little demand by the mills on the artesian water a better pumping efficiency would be obtained. By pumping in the evening a full supply from water tower would be assured should there be any extraordinary demand during the night.”
