ACCESS TO STORAGE SHEDS.
TO PROMOTE SHIPPING. Mr R. McMurray waited upon tbe Borough Council at last night’s meeting with a request to cross Purcell Street with a tramway. He said tlie proposal was to utilise the premises on his mill site, at the south end of the town, for shipping storage purposes to connect with a wharf, die construction of which the Harbour Board had sanctioned. The tramway would lead from the wharf to the sheds. It ivas in the borough’s interest to retain the shipping' at the wharf and in this connection an agitation Was afoot to construct a wharf at the Heads. His proposal would retain shipping at the local wharf and would he less costly than transporting goods from the Heads to the railway and less costly than tlie present method of handling cargoes. The accommodation for storage purposes on his site would be sufficient to meet till shipping that came to the port. The Council decided to grant the request at an annual fee of £5 mid to continue at the pleasure of the Council; also that the road be metalled to a width of one chain on either side of the tramway.
