WATER AND DRAINAGE.

ENGINEER’S REPORT,

- At last night's Council meeting the Borough Engineer reported as follows: —

Sewerage. —Since last meeting of the Council the sewers parallel to Whittaker Street have been laid, also that to the north of Robinson Sk as far as the first manhole. The weather has not been at all suitable for doing the outfall from the septie tank and this work will have to be held over till the warmer days after the new year. We do not consider it fair to the men to ask them to do such a wet job while the water is so cold. We think that if care is taken there should he no nuisance caused by the present method of phmping the tank empty, on a falliiig tide. Tf it. is the Council’s intention to go on with sewer work after the water pipes have been laid, it- is essential that more timber be ordered, also more pipes.

Water Supply.—Practically all the water pipes are now to hand, and if the weather is favourable the work of laying these mains should be nearly completed by the end of December. It is necessary to obtain about one thousand feet- of 2ihch water pipe for service connections, and we will be glad to receive authority to purchase same. We understand that there are several ratepayers wishing to connect to the water main with 2-inch collection pipes. If the Council gives permission to do this they will have to consider the question of water meters. The work of connecting the fourth well is now. well in hand and will be finished to-morrow. We have also gone on with the work of putting a two-inch connection to the wells, this being Mr ChrysUill’s idea for improving the water flow. Although we are doing this work we wish it to be distinctly understood that we accept no liability in the matter whatsoever • as we are of opinion that doing we are only making matters worse. Since milling has been again started at McMurray’s mill, aqd the artesian bores there have been brought into use, the Council’s wells have very nnich deteriorated as regards their flow and we have been informed that the same effect is noticeable at lh<e mill when our wells are running. All our wells have been tested for blockages and No. 2 well was found to be very much blocked. This has noty .been cleared, and tbe flow lias more than doubled. During the last month we have carefully watched the slight weep_s in the lower tank of the water tower. These.have now stripped altogether, and we are quite prepared to give tlie contractor a certificate for final payment. Mr H. W. Climie has personally in-, •speeded the tower and considers the contractor has made a very excellent .job. There seems to be some misunderstanding over the water level recorder, which was an extra to- the contract. This can now be lndde locally and fixed in position by Mr Neville.

It is our intention to lay the water pipes first where sewers have been laid, afterwards to do those streets with most houses. Cr Ross said that since the artesian well at Ale Murray’s mill had been in use, it had i-educed the flow at the borough’s wells by about 25 per cent,

Tlie r.eport was adopled with the exception of buying timber, which was he’d over. The- Town Clerk was instructed to-obtain particulars from other boroughs re amount of water per month allowed to householders and others as ordinary supply and the charges for water used over and above the amount laid down as ordinary, supply.
