INFLUENZA.
CASES ON H.M.S. CHATAM. Auckland, Yesterday. The District Health Officer states that on H.M.S. Chatham there are a few cases of mild influenza aboard and that the warship is going to a quarantine anchorage to-morrow morning as a precautionary measure. Since October Ist there have been fifteen cases of sickness aboard, but not all due to_ influenza. Three or four cases had"pneumonia, and there is one case of pneumonia following iuiluenza. The Mayor, Mr Gunson, has telegraphed to the Hon. C. J. Parr: “I am concerned at the revival of pneumonic influenza. There are several cases in the city and district, but as these are not notifiable, the Health Office is not in a position to keep themselves thoroughly posted. A more serious position is that cases are entering the port by shipping. T understand that there are a number of cases on the Chatham, and earnestly ask you not to allow these cases to land, but to require them (<> go to Quarantine Island. I should like Dr. Frengley to come to Auckland to investigate the position with Dr. Hughes, in wh,om we have confidence. In view of these local cases and other matters, reported together with an outbreak in Australia, we consider it our duty to place the matter before you and assure you of the fullest co-operation. The public should be advised, and realise the position to ensure adequate safeguards and personal care.”
Mr Gunson, in a statement, says there is no need for alarm, but the public should be warned.
