BAKERS’ AWARD.
WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. The Arbitration Court has issued the bakers’ and pastry cooks’ award, which is on a Dominion basis except on holidays, which are subject to local requirements. The hours are to be 46 per week as the Court believes 44 hours in most cases are insufficient for the work to be done. The Court has omitted the former restriction of the number of labourers and junior labourers, being of the opinion that the nature of the work exercises automatic restrictions. The commencing age for such has been fixed at 18 lo encourage apprenticeship. Overtime is standardised time and a-quarter for the first two hours, time and a-half for the second two hours, and double thereafter. Overtime is payable on the wages plus the bonuses. Females other than journeymen are permitted to pet-form certain skilled work at two-thirds of journeymen’s rate. Tea-rooms which do nor sell baker’s or pastrycook’s goods for consumption off the premises are excluded from the award. Home-made cake shops not employing journeymen are also excluded. The Court considers they should have a separate award. Work is not to start before 4 a.m. except on Saturdays and a day preceding a public holiday, when it may start one hour earlier than before, and for double and triple holidays two and three hours earlier, if country deliveries are made work starts at 3 a.m. There are special hours clauses for bakeries in small towns, and for pastry cooks whose day normally begins at 6 a.m. The wages are to be: Foreman, £5 3s; journeymen, £4 13s; labourers, £3 19s; apprentices, £1 7s 6d to £3 ss. Jhe award operates from 9th October and is for two years.
