COAL MINES DISPUTE.
MINERS REQUESTING SUPPORT. SYDNEY, Sept. 29. Pending the result of the conference between the owners and the miners, no further development has occurred in the coal dispute. The miners declare that they have been promised support by various unions and are also requesting support from unions overseas should trouble occur. In the event of a strike 20,000 miners in Australia will be thrown idle. The Amalgamated Engineers Union has decided that it will not allow the Council of Action to take supreme control of its affairs in connection with its industrial dispute, but states it is prepared to co-operate with the council. —Press Association. ENGINEERS’ CONFERENCE FAILS. MELBOURNE, Sept. 29. The conference between the disputes committee of the Trades Hall and the Engineers’ Union failed to reach ’a decision on the forty-eight. hours’ week. Further consideration of the question was adjourned till Monday.—Press Association.
