SOME EXCITING CONTESTS.

HOBART, Sept. 28. A great crowd witnessed tho finals of the Australian boxing championships. All the contests, except tho heavy-weight, were exciting and close. The New Zealanders won tho welter, feather, and middle division, putting up a brilliant showing. Ilnnsen was stronger than Neilson and had slightly the better of a good light. Tho New Zealander used both hands effectively, particularly liis snappy light. McDonald and Thomson provided the best contest of the evening. The New Zealander fought fiercely throughout, Thomson had the bettor of the first two rounds, but McDonad outstayed him. listing both hands with telling effect. They could not be separated and were ordered to box an extra round. Thomson hit desperately and cleaner than his opponent and won by the narrowest margin. Ihe men were cheered. The Mettle-Smith bout was another great go, with the New Zealander showing more science. Smith kept hint going hard throughout, but ho fought cleverly, doing most of the lcuding. and following up with snappy rights to the body and face. . . f Root was too vigorous anti lively lor Nolan.
