CONTRABAND LIQUOR.
CAUTION TO AMERICAN BUREAU. WASHINGTON, Sept. 26. lr is officially announced that Cabinet has decided to‘caution the prohibition enforcement bureau not to search foreign ships for contraband liquor beyond uu* three-mile limit. This is evidently the result of recent diplomatic conversations. It is especially interesting in view of the report that the British Government, js proparing to protect itself against any application of the revenue clause in the new Tariff Bill, which provides for the search and seizure of vessels found within the twelve nautical miles limit. Sir Auckland Geddcs yesterday talked to Mr Hughes (Secretary of Slate) and President Harding. Presumably the matter was brought up by the Revenue Department", eager to obtain a. specific ruling, following the recent attempt to seize a liquor-laden schooner flying the British flag, "which found outside the three-mile limit, but wiiliin the twelve-mile limit. Ihe ships skipper pointed to the British flag and threatened to shoot the first man who attempted to board the craft, whereupon the revenue officers withdrew.—A. and N.A cable-.
