DISASTER AT SEA.

SINKING OF THE ITATA. ONLY SIX PERSONS SAVED. SANTIAGO (Chili), Aug. 29. Latest reports show that 3IG perished in the Itata disaster and that only six were rescued. The steamer sailed from Coquimbo with 250 passengers, and was heavily over-laden. She met rough cross seas, which damaged the rudder. The gale then caught the helpless ship, which from time to time was swept by enormous waves. She took a heavy list and sank. Chilian warships, steaming to the scene, were able to rescue only six persons, who were clinging to wreckage.—A. and N.Z. cable.
