ELECTORAL ROLLS
NAMES STRUCK OFF. Mr 0. J. Hawken (Egmout) camplained in the House of Representa--tives on Thursday that names had been struck off the roll which should not have been struck off, there was quite a chorus from members who had other instances of similar happenings. The Prime Minister promised investigation, but urged that each elector should see to it that his name was on the roll. He said that the usual procedure was to send notices out and if the Postal Department could not find the persons to whom the notices were addi-essed, the names were struck off. Mr Jennings : “They are not sending out, notices now. I did not get one.”
The Prime Minister said that he knew there were many instances ol' people stiuck off the rolls who were entitled to vote. lie had seen the head of (he Electoral Department, who informed him that great care was being taken to get a clean roll. He agreed with that object and he had complete confidence in the Electoral Department. There were complaints of numes struck off, he had also received complaints that names were on the rolls when the persons could not be found. Mr E. J. Howard (Christchurch South) said this amounted to a suggestion that the rolls were being stuffed. AA'as the statement being investigated? 'flic Prime Minister said the complaints had been made to him. and he had asked the officers' of the Department- to investigate it as far as possible.
