THE MANAWATU SEAT.
Sir, —As a Liberal candidate for the Manawatu seat, I can see the utter futility of two Liberals and a Labourite contesting the seat with one Conservative. I have, therefore, communicated with Messrs Murdoch and Whibley, suggesting a conference of delegates from different parts of the electorate, with a view to selecting one candidate to represent Liberalism and Labour against Conservatism. Mr Whibley did me the honour of replying to my communication, but Mr Murdoch failed to acknowledge, my letter. I thereupon visited Shannon and interviewed Mr Murdoch. The latter absolutely refused to entertain any proposal for a conference of delegates. Indeed, he declared that ho intended going to the poll, no matter who might be selected as the official Liberal-Labour candidate. In these circumstances, I have no option put to retire from the contest. I do so reluctantly, but from a sense of loyalty to the cause of Liberalism. I sincerely thank those who have been so enthusiastic in their support of my candidature. I am, etc., ARTHUR H. VILE.
