SEVEN CLASSES OF BENEFICARIES. Although the European war aco - unts for the heaviest portion of New Zealand’s pension liability, there are six ether classes of pensioners who draw .imoi'g them abou: a million sterling out of the gross payments made last year of £2,791,119. This amount was made up as follows: — War pensions £1,726,174 Old Age pensions 743,£20 Widows’ pensions 186,457 Maori War pensions 37,/37 Miners’ pensions 26,972 Epidemic pensions 65,486 Police pensions 133 There was an increase of 604 in the number of old age pensions during the year, but the widows’ pensions decreased by 78. There are 23,343 pensions of this class in force and the children who benefit number 9,118. Maori War pensions are a rapidly diminishing quantity, for the total of 811 at the commencement of the year dropped in the latest period to 740. Miners’ pensions, which are a charge on the industry, are 506 in number, showing an increase of 32 for the year. j'
Epidemic pensions, instituted after the intiuenza visitation, are diminishing, the decrease last year having been 166, leaving an annual liability of £54,994.
