LAYING OF WATER MAINS
ENGINEER DISSATISFIED WITH PROGRESS. G ANG’S SERVICE DISPENSED WITH. At the April meeting of the Boroug Council it was decided to engage a working foreman to surp«rvise the laying of water mains in Main Street, the work to be carried out by day labour instead of by contract. A price under the latter system had previously been obtained but the engineer recommended the course adopted and the work was proceeded with. The progress made las not come up to. the expectations of the engineer and at last night’s meeting he advised that the Council immediately dispense with the pipe laying gang. The. Mayor sajß, in explanation, that the EngincerMiad visited Foxton lately and was of the opinion that the gang employed in laying the water mains was not progressing as well as they should. He therefore recommended the immediate dismissal of the gang. Cr. Smith asked if it would not be possible for Mr Reid to supervise the work. Cr. Ross said that Mr Reid would complete the septic tank construction next week. The suggestion of Cr. Smith’s might he practicable then. Cr. Martin asked if it wasn’t the delay in providing material which had retarded the work. He also said that he had heard of the complaint, by the engineer in the street. Tie considered the engineer should have reported direct to the Council. Decided that the Engineer’s recommendation re main laying gang be adopted and that the men be paid off on Tuesday night, the 13th inst, the foreman be given one week’s notice of termination of engagement. Crs. Whibley, Smith, Rand and Martin voted against the motion.
