BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
There was an attendance of thirteen at the annual meeting of the above society held in the Town Hall supper-room last night. Mr Perreau presided.
f The annual report stated inter alia that in June a conference was held with the Borough Council when Mr Black’s plans re lay out of Easton Park were discussed. The society’s efforts so far have been confined to planting the front portion and levelling and grassing the remainder. A Finance Committee was set up to deal with accounts and finance generally. £250 was placed at deposit for six months and £25,0 for two years, leaving a balance of. £6O in cuiTent account for maintenance and other expenses. Last autumn Easton Park was ploughed and levelled and sown in oats and a road formed from the Main St. entrance and a number of trees and shrubs replaced. At the old cemetery, a concrete fence was erected, the hill levelled and the slopes turfed and shrubs and hedges planted. The, paths and steps have been delayed 1o allow the ground to settle. It was suggested that the Borough Council erect a rest room for ladies.on the site, but declined as the reserve is not vested in the Council. It was also suggested to name the reserve “Ihakarii Gardens.” The Borough Council was approached to share the cost of maintenance work, but replied that they could not assist the society. It has been recommended that •the services of a permanent caretaker he employed instead of employing casual labour. Fifteen seats for the reserves have been donated by citizens and will be distributed in the various reserves. The work in hand is in connection with the concrete steps, path and gate at the old cemetery and the planting of plane, trees along Park Street.
The \ balance-sheet showed total receipts) for the year'£964 17s 3d and expenditure £412 6s sd, leaving a credit ha lance of £554 10s lOd.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The rules of the society as approved by the committee, were adopted. The sub-committee report re old cemetery was adopted and it was decided to spend £l2O on improvements as detailed. It was decided to plant Easton Park boundaries with a hedge. It was decided to urge the Borough Council to continue the footpa tli along the southern boundary of the old cemetery and asphalt the reading to the west of the Triangle Reserve. The election of officers was as follows: —Patron, Mr A. S. Easton; President, Mr M. E. Pen-can; vicepresident, Mrs F. Robinson; hbn. secretary and treasurer, held over: committee, Miss Speirs, Mesdames Pearson, McMurray, P. Easton, Moore, Alex Ross. Messrs Admore, Christie, Poole, C. IT Symons, Trueman and Walton; auditor, Mr W. Beck, Votes of thanks were accorded fo the comm’Pro and past officers.
