THE BULGARIAN BUG.

The “Bulgarian Bug” is the popular mime for a definite bacteriological organism, the bacillus Bulgariens. This organism is shaped like a little rod, hence the name (bacellum, a rod). It is one of a small group which produce lactic acid, turning milk sour by its action. The benefit derived from it is felt primarily by people whose stomach cells are not in proper working order, as it helps those cells in digesting starch foods. Secondly, and perhaps mainly, it stops autointoxication. Autointoxication is the ingestion of poisonous products of fungi found in ilic digestive trad, such as ptomaines. These have a delilerious action on Ihe system generally. The hug, if taken in copious quantities, kills these fungi, and is the treatment is kept up, prevents their re-growth. Neurasthenia is brought about, to a large extent, by digestive trouble, or by these poisonous products keeping the system in a low state. It therefore prevents to a great extent the possibility, and affects the cure, of a great amount of nervous trouble. The effects were shown many years ago by Metehnikoff, the bacteriologist, when the organism was used pandemically. It did not spread at that time, however, as much as this present craze. The hug is a good, strong organism, and pasteurisation of the milk is unnecessary. Fresh milk does admirably. Pasteurisation produces a stronger dose, but is unnecessary. If suffering from indigestion or nerves, try it. It cannot do any harm. Do not heed the small talk. It is a scientific fact. Scientists hack it, and have done so for many yeai-s.
