INCIPIENT FIRE.
PROMPT WORK BY BUCKET BRIGADE SAVES SERIOUS OUTBREAK. As if to add to the wierdness of last night's electric storm, the fire bell'and syren sounded when the storm was at its height. No flames were noticeable, but a dense volume of smoke was seen issuing from the upstairs portion of Manchester Buildings, opposite the Town Hall. / Mr P. Mcßrearty was one of the first to notice the outbreak, and he, with others, immediately rushed to the scene.* Water was available, and the Haines were soon extinguished in the room occupied by Mr Hazell as a photographic studio. The Brigade arrived on the scene promptly, and it was found neeessnrv to remove one or two boards on the roof and walls; where wood was -till smouldering. Mr Ilazell cannot account, for the outbreak. He says that everything was quite all right when he left the room some time previously. Most of tin* furniture and fittings in the billiard room on the ground floor were quickly removed, and very little damage'wns sustained. A good deal of damage was done to the studio bv fire and water.
The. premises are owned by Mr Brvant.
