THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

FEBRUARY GRADING RETURNS. The following report on the gradof hemp, tow and stripper slips was issued by the Department of Agriculture for the month of February as follows: — Hemp: The total number of bales graded was 7,542, as compared with 9,151 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 1,609 bales. ... For the 12 months ended February 28th. 1922, the number of bales graded was 58,057 as compared with 86,429, a decrease of 28.372 bales. Tow: During the month 1544 bales were graded as compared with 1,669 for the same period last year, a decrease of 126 bales. For the 12 months ended 28th. February, 1922 the number of bales graded was 12,461 as compared with 18,789, a decrease of 6,328 bales for the previous 12 months. Stripper Slips: Four bales as compared with 265 for the corresponding month of last year. For the 12 months ended 28th. February 1922 the number of bales graded was 831 as compared with 1,660 bales for the previous twelve months. The detailed particulars of the hemp graded at each port was a.s follows: —

Seven hales at Auckland, and 31 bales at Pieton were graded fine. Sixty-eight hales at Wellington and two hales at Auckland were rejected. Xo bales were.condemned. The following shows the number of hales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: — Fine 38 (140), good fair 3,305 (1,787), high fair 3,190 (4,782), low fair 881 (2,044), common 258 (28fi), rejected 70 (109), condemned nil (3), a decrease of 1,609 hales. The number of bales graded at each* port was as follows: —Wellington 3,091, Foxton 1,243, Auckland 1,658, Pieton 67, Blenheim 223, Wairoa 298, Bluff 359, Dunedin 398. Lyttelton 205. The following are the details of the tow graded: —

Four hales at Foxton, and 30 bales at Auckland were condemned. The number of hales- in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: — Ist grade 071 (706), 2nd grade 733 (895), 3rd grade 106 (63), condemned 34 (5), a decrease of 725 hales. ' - •

The number of hales graded at each port was as follows: —Wellington 527, Foxton 339, Auckland 312, Picton 31, Blenheim 96, Wairoa 62, Bluff 126, Dunedin 26, Lyttelton 25.
