RIVER EROSION.

MENACE TO FOXTON-SHANNON HOAD AND BRIDGE. A conference was held at Moutoa on Monday between representatives of the Manawatu and Horowhenua County Councils, Shannon and Foxton Borough Councils, in reference to river erosion, which is threatening road couynunication between Foxton and Shannon by encroaching on the road, which at one spot is only a few feet from where the river is boring in. The threatened danger is about half a mile to the north-west of the bridge. This erosion is not only endangering the road, but is diverting the currentto the Shannon approach to the. bridge, which is already menaced. A stop-bank runs along the roadside, but this, it is considered, will not prevent the next flood carrying away the road. The Manawatu Council’s proposal is to divert the road immediately from the danger zone. This work, however, will not remove the menace to the bridge unless protective works are erected to divert the current. It is suggested that the services of an expert engineer be employed to inspect and report upon a comprehensive scheme for the permanent safety of the bridge. Several tentative proposals were made, which will be submitted to the bodies interested for consideration.
