A man with a very bad reputation was arguing about ways of spelling. “It’s all wrong,” be said, “to leave out the ‘u’ in word- like harbor, neighbour, candour, honour, isn’t it? Maurice Barrymore, the actor: “I’m not sure about the first two, but when it comes to candor and honor I certainly leave you out.” An elderly woman named Mrs Royers, of Alexandra Street, Palmerston N., attempted to commit suicide by cutting her throat with a razor last night. She was removed to the hospital in a critical condition.
The C. M. Ross Coy.’s new premises in Main Street are now nearing completion. The commodious display windows are now completed, and the linn’s window dressers are busy at .work setting out a very enticing display of goods. The premises are of attractive appearance, and an ornament to the business portion of the town.
At most of the race meetings throughout the Dominion there has been

Mr James Meagher, of Te Rehunga, Hawke’s Bay, received word ~n Sunday of the death by drowning at Wairon of his youngest son, Frank. Tt appears that the deceased. who is a returned soldier, was crossing a river in a cage, with a companion, when a rope broke, precipitating both men into the stream. Young Meagher, who was farming in the district, was drowned, hut his companion escaped. General do Wet, whose death was reported on Saturday, was Oom-mander-in-Chief of the Free State Forces during the Boer War, and veils famous for his skill in eluding the Brir-di forces. He has since been an irreconcilable Nationalist, and. in 1.914, he led the South African rebellion against British rule.
