RATIFICATION OF AGREEMENT
The Dai] Eireann ratified the Anglo-Irish Treaty by sixty-four votes to fifty-seven. The President, Mr de Valera, announced his resignation. An analysis of the Dail Eireann voting shows that if the members had voted by constituencies, the ratification majority would ha ve been twelve.
The newspapers, while welcoming the decision, emphasise the baffling uncertainties ahead, in view of the De Valeraites’ implacable hostility. They interpret De Valera’s declaration to the Australian Hibernians as inferring a determination to offer more than Constitutional opposition to flie ratificationist Ministry. Some correspondents report there is grave danger of a splitting of the Republican army, resulting in warfare. Nevertheless, the British Government intends to leave nothing undone in the'direction of expediting the complete fulfilment of the Treaty terms. A Cabinet committee to-day begins preparations for the military evacuation of Ireland, a general amnesty, and a transfer of military powers. .
