GAS MANAGER’S REPORT

The gas works Manager submitted the following report at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting: - “The amount of gas manufactured during the month of October shows an increase over the corresponding period of last year, fiftyone tons of coal were carbonised, nnd 17 tons 15cwt. of coke was sold. Three meters were not registering this month; 4 meters were changed, and two services cleared. Two new services were put in and connected up. The drain at the back of the works has been put in. The well Slaving run dry, I found it necessary to connect up a temporary pipe taking the water supply from the creek. While cleaning the scrubber an extra man was put on for one week. It was full of grids which were in a very dirty condition. Owing to the difficulty in getting them out, another manhole had to be cut about halfway down. The ammonia fumes were so strong it was necessary to commence work some hours before sunrise. Before the scrubber can be cleaned out lignin another manhole will have to be put in just above the bottom grid, so that the coke can be taken out easily. The condensers, which were very dirty, have also been cleaned. Mr Parker, the retort setter, is here repairing the bed of four letorts, and is making a good job of same. With care, this bed should last through another winter. Ike bed of six retorts is in a very bad condition; two of the retorts have been leaking badly. Owing to the great demand for MeSkimming’s retort goods, I ask that the Council place on order the six retorts and silica goods required for the new setting, for it will be some six months before this material is available.” Cr. Martin pointeU out that the amount of unaccounted-for gas was very large. He also said that huge volumes of gas was going up the chimney every day. The Mayor said that the unacco-unted-for gas was largely explained for by the leak in No. 1 holder, which was now let down, and stopped, any further loss. He thought they should refer the matter of finance to the Gas Works Committee. It was decided that the Gas Manager’s report be adopted, except for the ordering of material for new retorts.
