ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT.

The Borough Road Foreman (Mr A. G. Huntley) reported as follows at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting: — “During the past month the road staff has been engaged on the following works: Top dressing foot-

path, Coley Street, with tar and coke ashf grading footpath, Avenue Road, and asphalting same; mixing asphalt in council yard, dischaiging Belmont screenings; weeding water tables and footpaths Wharf, Clyde, Main and Union Streets; carting metal and patching ruts, Moutoa Road, Union, Johnston, Park and Duncan Streets; mowing Triangle, and general maintenance work. Coley Street footpath has now been completed to Hillary Street. About half of the recently kerbed portion of footpath in Avenue Road has been graded and asphalted, and we are now mixing asphalt for the remainder. We have a considerable amount of work to do in grading portions of this footpath, and the hedge on one property will have to be trimmed back. The owner has requested that we do the work and charge the cost to her. All the Belmont screenings ordered have arrived, and I think we shall have enough for all the work in hand, Main Street, footpath included. As we have so far been unable to get metal from Manawatu County Council, we have had to use from the stock in the yard (this has nearly all gone, principally on Moutoa road, which was in rather a bad way). There are a few places on Main Street which have been broken up by the traffic, and I intend patching these with tarred metal.” Cr. Bryant asked if something could be done about the bumps and heap of metal in Main Street left by the water and drainage staff. He suggested the borough staff do the work of. clearing and levelling, and charge to the Water and Drainage Committee. Cr. Rand pointed out that the metal had been left by request of the Borough Foreman. Cr. Smith asked that the guard* round some of the trees be removed He said that there was a motion on the books to that effect. The timber was being stolen. The report was adopted.
