ARMISTICE DAY.

Three years ago yesterday all was quiet on the Western Front. The Great War, which had caused untold suffering for just over four years and three months, came to an end at 11 n,m. on 11th November,1918 —fhe eleventh month of the year. It was the eleventh hour of Germany’s fate, and her doom as a world aggressor was sealed by the might of the Allied Powers. In compliance with the message from His Majesty the King “to perpetuate the memory of those who laid down their lives to achieve victory of Right and Freedom,” the signing of the Armistice was yesterday commemorated throughout the British Empire. Except for the ceremony at the State School, there was no organised observance. The public, generally, went about their work as usual. There were a few exceptions, of course.

Mr Broad, acting school master, assembled the children, and reference was made to the occasion. The children then remained silent for two minutes, after which the National Anthem was sung.
