Mr William* Bock, the well-known Wellington engraver, was a visitor to Foxton yesterday.

Mr W. K. Barnard, solicitor, of ITelensville, and well-known in Foxton, was married this week. The name of Mr Tlinds was omitted from the list forwarded to ns of those who took part in the concert at Orona Downs on Tuesday night. The monthly meeting- of the local Stale School Committee will be held at the school on Monday evening next, at 7..'10 o’clock.

To-day is (lay Fawkes Day, which will no doubt be celebrated in the orthodox way by the youngsters this evening. We may point out that the letting-off of fireworks in a public place is forbidden by law.

Good progress is being made by the contractor with the erection of Messrs C. M. Ross Co.’s business premises in Main Street. When completed, it will be one of the most attractive-looking business premises in Foxton.

A Native witness at the Hastings Magistrate’s Court staled that his only income was .Cl 13 per year, and on this he kept himself. This led a lawver to ask how the Native was able to buy the clothes he was wearing. The Native replied that he had had the clothes for at least seven years.

A young man named Sydney Dash, employed as a shunter on the railways at Tailmpe, was knocked down by a moving truck yesterday. His right leg was badly crushed, and had to be amputated above the knee, in addition to which injuries two lingers of the right hand will have to be amputated. At the Christchurch Supreme Court yesterday, the jury disagreed, and a new trial was ordered, in the case against Thomas Long, charged with having carried on the business of a bookmaker. In a similar charge against Fred Dacre, the panel was exhausted, and the case was therefore adjourned till November 14.

The following letter from a lady ratepayer was read at Saturday’s meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council: —“I mm sorry to have to say that I refuse to pay any rates, because of the inconvenience I am continually suffering from the' want of water, and also the dreadful condition of the road.” The chairman said he considered this a challenge, and it was decided that the rates be sued for.

Still another drop in the price of butter is announced at Christchurch. The wholesale rates have been reduced from Is Bifd to Is 7ijd per lb, and most grocers have readjusted the selling price of standard Canterbury brands to Is 9d, being a reduction of Id per lb in some instances, and 2d in others.

Very few townspeople visited the A. and P. Show at Palmerston yesterday' (People’s Day). No holiday .was observed locally.

An election of five trustees for the Moutoa Drainage Board will take place on Monday by the ratepayers within the prescribed drainage area. The polling booth is at the Board’s office (Town Hall), and the hours of polling are between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The candidates are: Messrs W. E. Barber, John Chrystall, F. S. Easton, Kenneth Easton, A. King, and Oswald Upton. We are pleased to publish reports of public interest of happenings in connection with local social clubs and organisations, if forwarded by secretaries, but cannot take officiaj cognisance of same unless ' the time-honoured courtesy to the Press is extended. Omissions in (he latter connection are sometimes due to inexperience on the part of officials.
