AMYTHAS WINS THE CIIAM-

PION PLATE,

Much local interest was evinced in the Champion Plate of £IOOO, at the Wellington meeting on Saturday, for the reason that first and second horses are locally-owned. Amythas, the winner, is owned by Mr F. S. Easton, and Rouen by Mr It. Heppner (and trained by Mr Alf. Wright).

Amythas (9st. 41bs.) was sent out a good favourite, but the support accorded Grotesque, Sasanof and Radiant Light, and Rouen (Ost.), made him pay a good price. When they lined up, Grotesque had the rails, with Radiant Light next, then Amythas, Rouen, Vagabond and Sasanof, on the outside. The start was a bad one. Sasanof got the best of it, and Aiqythas was one of those who got the worst ol it. Turning out of the straight, Amythis got a bad bump, but kept his feet well. .When they .entered the back stretch, Sasanof w r as still in the lead, and next to him were Rouen and Amythas. Radiant Light was in the rear. At the six furlong post Rouen took charge, and, rounding the bend for home, he was still in charge, with Amythas coming on the outer. Rouen and Amythas were first into the straight, and well below the distance Amythas took charge, but had to be kept going as Rouen stuck to him all the way up the straight. Amythas won by a short neck, with Grotesque three lengths back third. Sasanof was fourth, and Radiant Light fifth.

The cup which accompanies the stake was presented on the lawn by the Hon. Sir William Hcrries, and was received by Air T. M. Wilford on behalf of Air F. S. Easton, the owner of Amythas, who was not present( Sir William Hcrries congratulated the owner on possessing so fine a horse; and Mr Wilford said that when the people saw a racing trophy presented by a member of the Alinistry and received by the Leader of the Opposition they might guess that the Gaming Bill was not lost yet.

Amythas has been scratched for the Stewards’ Handicap at the A.J. C. Aleeting.
