THE PRICE OF BUTTER.
In conversation with a director of a district butter factory this morning, we were informed that butter was declining. He said a cable received from London recommended the Banks restricting advances on butter to Is per lb.' and fid on cheese. He said his company was selling wholesale at Is 7d, and that the retail price of same was Is lOd, and he would not be surprised to learn that a further drop to Is 9d retail would be in operation next week. He said the decline was due to rushing old butter on the market, but there might be a rise when the new butter arrived on the Home market. He expressed the opinion that cheese would -undoubtedly be the best paying proposition this season. His company had paid out 2s to suppliers for -September, but •lie could not hazard what next month’s payment would be. In his the price of butter next season would be at pre-war value. This would hit those who had bought farms at high values, but would not affect farmers of old'
standing. The retail price of butter in Foxton to-day is Is lid per lb.
