INCIPIENT FIRE

At about 6.30 o’clock last evening an incipient fire broke out in the engine room of Air W. Nye’s mill on the river bank. .The fire was noticed by All- 0. Dawson from the glare issuing from the mill. Together with Alessrs Broad, Symons, Irwin and W. Collins, they got to work with buckets and succeeded in getting the flames under. The brigade also' arrived and assisted in making everything safe. The origin of the fire is a mystery, but it is surmised that a spark ignited some cotton waste in the engine room, which smouldered and ignited the engineer’s bench and caught the wall. Mr Nye informs us that. £25 will cover the damage. Had the mill gone, it would have resulted in a very serious loss to the owner, as well as throwing a number of hands out of employment.
