“PUTTING THE CLAWS IN.”
When the executive of the St. Helen’s Home Committee met at Palmerston on Thursday evening, the question arose as to whether the press should be asked to retire in \iew of the fact that the meeting was merely a preliminary one, called to discuss accounts.
Some members were in favour of the Press remaining, but it was pointed out to them that the business was of a personal nature, dealing with-the accounts which had been submitted by various creditors for payment. Mr W. Lints, the campaign organiser, threw more light on the subject when he explained: “I have never in the last, eight years been in a campaign where there has been so much bleeding —you understand what I mean by bleeding —putting the claws in as deep as they can.” He mentioned that one man had put in’an account which was considered excessive, and had finally agreed to reduce it by £l9. “And there are a lot more to be trimmed,” remarked Mr Lints.
Members agreed that under the circumstances it was best, that the press should retire. —Times.
