A CLERK’S CONFESSION.
THEFT OF OVER TWO THOUSAND POUNDS.
Christchurch, Aug. 23
In tin* Magistrate’s Court to-day Patrick John Butler (aged twentyone), a clerk in the State Coal Department’s office, Christchurch, was charged with having stolen sums totalling £2,033 4s 4d from the State Coal Department between Ist September, 1920, and 4th August, 1921. Accused pleaded guilty. The evidence showed that the money had been taken from the cash register. “When accused confessed, he said that he had put all the money in the Post Offive Savings Bank, Where he had almost £2,000 to his credit. He had refunded all the stolen money. Previously lie had borne an excellent character. Butler was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed.
