THE ESCAPE OF MATTHEWS.
Wellington, Aug. 23,
The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister in charge of Mental Hospitals, has instituted an enquiry into the circumstances under which. Reginald Matthews escaped from the Seaeliffe Asylum. His escape was effected under extraordinary circumstances. It is possible( though it has not been definitely ascertained who helped him) that one of the patients when cleaning the corridor had passed the blade of! a knife into the cell. None of tint attendants would have assisted him, as all knew that Matthews was insane. There was no doubt that Matthews had with him in the cell some sharp instrument. Dr. Hay holds that it is impossible to guarantee that some person will not escape, though every means will be taken to prevent a repetition. Such persons, he says, should not. be in a. mental hospital, and other arrangements should be made in the erection of buildings to accommodate criminal lunatics.
