I nm sorry that a more hopeful reply cannot he made to your request.” BOROUGH ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Borough Engineer reported as follows: —
“Since last Council meeting the construction of Main Street west sewer from Wharf Street to Clyde Street, and Liddell Street to Harbour Street sewer has been completed, and to-day Mr Read opened out in Cooke Street. The sewers at present authorised will be completed in about three weeks time. We ask the Council’s instructions as to the next section to be proceeded with. For any further of the sewers, except Lady’s Mile, we should require another diaphragm pump. It may be possible to procure a reliable second-hand pump." Decided tliat the Water and Drainage Engineers’ report lie adopted, and that the next section of sewer to be constructed be the Lady’s Mile section. Decided that Mr Murray’s account. for the sum of £fi Cs Od be paid for plans drawn up for well sites, and that £1 11s fid be,paid for three additional plans, subject to their being accepted by the Harbour Board and District Land Registrar. Cr. Whibley voted against the motion.
OBJECTJOXS TO SEWER
THROUGH PRIVATE PROPERTY
Letters were*received, objecting to the course of the sewer through private property from Mr A. Eraser, Lady's Mile, and from Messrs Hankin and Eitzherbert, on behalf of Mr G. Coley, Xorbiton Road. A letter was also received from Messrs Moure and Bergin. on behalf of Mr G. Coley, asking that the date of lieu ring objections be held over, as their client wished to call expert advice on the matter.
Decided that Mr A. Fraser’s objection be not sustained, and that Air Coley’s request for an adjournment of the hearing be acceded to, the hearing to take place on the 12th September, and that the 12th September be’ fixed for hearing of such further objections.—Carried. The Mayor, in speaking to the motion, said that ho was amazed at objections being made. The sewer-
age system was for the benefit of the whole of the community, and he saw no reason whatever for any objections to its course. The workmen were instructed to be as careful as possible, and where ever possible to' make good . any damage done. . " Cr. Smith said that in a of cases more good was damage. He knew of one inswWm where the fences were put in a better condition than previous to the . sewer going through the property. Cr. Martin stated that evidently those who fought against the loan for water and drainage were going to tight against the passage of the sewer, and incidentally, against the health of the public. Evidently some people placed a few trees before the health of the community.
Cr. Whibley stated that the Coined should not create a precedent iy allowing the date set for the tearing of objections to be altered.
Crs Whibley and Martin voted against the motion in so far as it referred to the amendment of the date of hearing of objections. REMOVAL OF TURF WITHIN
THE BOROUGH. Cr. Coley asked who had given permission to anyone to remove turf from Norbiton Road.. The Mayor stated that the contractors working at the public school had come to him and asked to he allowed to remove a little turf for use at the school. He had agreed, provided that they obtained I lie .consent of the Public Works Committee. This they did. Later they* obtained the permission of most of the Councillors to get some more turf for the Maori Cemetery. Tie considered that no damage had boon done.
Cr. Coley slated that they hadn’t taken a little, but a great deal. He had read an objection in the paper by two returned men, and was of Hie opinion that they were quite right. He considered that it would he all right if the ground was sown with seed and harrowed. Cr, Whibley staled tlml the turf was taken off a spot where turf had been taken it few years previously. The ground had not been sown then, and the grass had come away quite freely. Cr. Walker stated that he did not think that the roots had been taken. Cr. Coley stated that the Beautifying Society should lie asked to sow grass seed where the- turf had
been taken. Cr. Whibley said that it was a waste of money to sow it with grass seed.
It was decided that where the turf has been taken, it should he harrowed and sown, Crs. Martin, Whih’ey and Smith voting against the motion.
