PIRANI SHIELD.
The local State School seven-a-side football team journeyed.to Palmerston on Saturday to take part in the seven-a-side primary schools tournament for the Pirani Shield. The team was defeated in the first match by Campbell Street, the score being B—o. This put Foxton out of the tournament, which finally resulted in a win for Campbell Street by 13—0.
Foxton School was the first winner of the. Shield, which it now transfers to Campbell Street, but has high hopes of regaining possession of it next year.
The team wishes to thank Mr G. Coley for motoring them to Palmerston N.
The Management Committee of t ho Horowhenua Rugby Union meets at Levin to-night.
The Hawke*’ Bay-Manawatu representative match, played at Hastings on Saturday afternoon, opened in threatening weather. The second half was played in torrents of rain, and play degenerated into a mud scramble. In the first spell Hawke’s Bay made 13 points, and Manawatu none. The game ended with Hawke's Bay 19, Manawatu 6. Hawke’s Bay were the better team. They had the upper hand most of the time, and won on their merits.
The Springboks (says the Christchurch Sun in its report of the match) Jielded what is almost then
heaviest set of forwards. The heaviest pack of eight scrummagers that they can put in the field averaged list llilbs. That which they selected for Saturday’s game averaged list. 91b. It included the biggest three men in the party—Royle Morkel, J. M. (“Baby”) Michau, arid J. J. van Rooyen. These three weigh 48st. 131 b. between them. The Springboks’ backs to-day were also a fairly weighty Jot, and the whole r team averaged 13st BJlb. Against that weighty aggregation Conterbury fielded a team averaging 12st.
