Christchurch, Saturday.
In the presence of nearly 14,000 spectators, Canterbury beat the Springboks by G points to 4. The day was dull and calm. Rain fell up till about noon, and there was a heavy shower just after the opening of the second spell. The ground and ball were greasy, but each side handled it well. The Canterbury team was picked with a view to the defensive, but it proved excellent in all departments of the game, being only overshadowed by the visitors in the tight play. It was mainly a forward battle, with the advantage chiefly with Canterbury. Their loose play was very tine, and frequently had their opponents in .trouble. The passing bouts initiated by both teams made little headway, collaring being of too solid a nature. Once the Springboks gave a delightful display of their quality, but it broke down through the tackling of the Canterbury three-quarters. The visiting backs were not so nippy as the local men, and gave the impression of being slow. There was one occasion when Strauss showed that he had pace, beating three opponents to the ball, and touching down. When the final whistle went, there was a rush of enthusiasts to greet the local men, who were chaired off the ground, amid indescribable scenes of enthusiasm.
Wilson and Ford scored for Canterbury, and Strauss potted a goal for the Springboks. Mr Simpson, of "Wellington, was referee. The Canterbury team was as selected, and the Springboks were represented by: G. P. Morkel, Meyer, Zeller, Clarkson, Strauss, J. P. Michau, Tindall, Roy Morkel, J. M, Michau, W. H. Morkel, Pienaar, Ellis, Van Rooyen, Du ITessis and Mellish.
