BOWLING

A VERY GOOD YARN,

The following story, as related by Air Arthur Barnett to “Measurer,” in the Dunedin Star, is interesting..

A Wellington bowler well known as having a full conceit of his own ability, made a holiday trip, and on his return was telling his experiences to his own club-fellows. He said that'in one strange town lie wandered on to a green and was greeted by an elderly gentleman, the only one present, with “Are you a bowler? Would you like to play me a singles?” Feeling particularly fit, the Wellington man said he would. He was supplied with a good set of bowls, and started proceedings. Better now to continue in his own words: “1 led off with a shot which finished about a couple of inches from kitty. The old gentleman came just inside and pushed me out. Next shot I ran kitty a few inches and stopped almost on it. My opponent took it away from me, and beat me again with his next shot. Mind you, 1 was playing well, too, but lie got three out of the head. Next time it was practically the same. I was playing at the top of my form, but there was nothing that old man couldn’t do. He drove and trailed, and drew and got another three against me. I altered my tactics — drove kitty into the ditch, and rested with it about a foot away. The old chap put one right on the wooden edge and lay the shot. I shoved him into the ditch; lie put another there. And so on, till he was 12 to inv nothing. I tell you, lie was great.”

“Some player that!” remarked me of his listeners. “A real good

“Good! He was wonderful! AVhy, to you know, at the finish I only >eat him by two!”
