CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The monthly meeting of the Co- , ancil of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (president), A. X. Smith, F, D. tVhibley, Jno. Ross, C. Pearson, Admore, Christie, Aloorhouse, Perrcau, Rev. Walton and Roore (secretary). The president reported upon several minor matters which had been attended to since last meeting, the principal matter being a conference with the group area officer re dayiglit parades for territorials, which are now held in the evening.
SHIPPING TO THE PORT
Several replies were received from coastal shipping companies who had been written to asking them to send vessels to the port, and failing to do so, to state reasons. The replies have already appeared, the principal reasons being that the bar and channel caused delay and risk. It was pointed out by members chat since the letters were sent out the Kennedy had made two trips, .did that the recent flood in the river had made the bar workable. It was the opinion of members that as soon as the dredge got to work on :he sand banks shipping would be facilitated. A discussion took place on past shipping and the future prospects of the port. In the latter connection the need was stressed for providing outward cargo. It was decided to forward the letters received from shipping companies to the Harbour Board, and to assure :he Board that the Chamber would be pleased to co-operate with them In any way to improve shipping, and to ask for a copy of the river chart.
RAILWAY DEVIATION
The following resolution passed by the Levin Chamber of Commerce was endorsed: — “Thai flic Levin Chamber of Commerce enters an emphatic protest against the Government committing the country during the pre--ont financial stress to the enormous sum of money involved in the carrying out of the suggested railway deviation at Palmerston North. That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Acting-Prime Minister, the Minister of Railways, and Member for the District. That the affiliated Chambers of Commerce be asked to support the foregoing resolution."
MAN AW AT U-OR OU A RIVER BOARD.
The president referred to the steps being taken to form a river hoard to deal with overflow waters of the Manawntu and Oroua rivers. The formation of such a hoard would he beneficial to the adjacent lands, and incidentally to the port. It was resolved, to write a letter of commendation to the promoters, and tender the Chamber’s co-operation in their efforts. It was resolved to write the Borough Council, thanking them for taking steps to have the borough inspected by the Health Officer, and to make enquiries re insanitary dwellings. A vote of sympathy was parsed to Dr. and Mrs Mandl in their recent bereavement.
■ It was resolved to circularise members ae overdue subscriptions.
